Bookstore Romance Day was yesterday, August 17th. To celebrate, I participated in a book signing/reading at King’s Books in Tacoma with 6 other romance authors. Not only was this the first annual Bookstore Romance Day, it was also my very first live author event.
Preparing for the evening, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would anyone show up? Would I freeze with stage fright? Would anyone buy my book? Excitement and apprehension twisted my nerves into a snarled mess.
Now that it’s over, I’m happy to report back that it went incredibly well. Several family members and friends showed up to offer support, which helped keep the stage fright at bay. Because of nerves, my setup of the excerpt I chose amounted to “I wrote about some characters and stuff,” but I didn’t completely freeze up. And the reading of the excerpt itself went much better than I expected. Apparently, it’s easier to read to familiar faces than a sea of strangers. Also, I sold some books…and not just to family!
The best part of the event, though, was that I felt like I was in my element. I have a passion for writing, but I wasn’t sure I had it in me to succeed at the other things that go with being an author. Now I know I do. Can’t wait to do this again!
