Cari grew up in Southern California, raised by a mother who encouraged creative expression and insisted any career could be approached with the mindset of an artist. Living so close to Hollywood, Cari originally considered film and theater to be her creative outlet. She attended California State University, Northridge, but left her studies just shy of a bachelor’s degree to pursue a career in theater. She worked behind the scenes on several productions at the Falcon Theatre (re-established as The Garry Marshall Theatre in 2017) in Burbank, including the debut run of the musical Happy Days.
It was during this time as a theater tech that Cari discovered her true passion. She said goodbye to the stage and began studying the craft of fiction writing. Although they’re different types of storytelling, Cari discovered a lot of what she learned in her days of live theater could be translated into her novels. A compelling story is a compelling story whether it’s on screen, on stage, or on the page.
As a reader, Cari has always enjoyed the adventure of thriller and suspense novels — the grittier and darker the better. Yet she’s undeniably drawn to the promise of Happily Ever After in romances, especially in historical settings. This may be because in real life she’s a cynical optimist. She knows horrible things happen, but she truly believes that justice eventually prevails and that love has the power to heal all wounds.
Cari is also an amateur history buff and research addict. Her go-to procrastination technique is to research random historical tidbits or visit historical sites and museums. She has always been particularly fascinated by her home state’s rich and diverse history. In her opinion, California has been sorely neglected in the realm of historical romances. You won’t find any dukes in her stories. Instead, you’ll find heroes like gold miner Sebastian Henderson in Fool’s Gold.
